Conjugated oestrogens and Medroxyprogesterone are combined together in this medicine.
This medicine is used as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women. It is used to relieve symptoms after menopause such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness and itch.
Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone is also used to prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones) in postmenopausal women.
Take Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Try to take it at the same time each day.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- known, suspected, or history of breast or womb lining cancer
- blood clot disorder e.g. deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg veins), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in your lungs), protein C or protein S deficiency
- stroke
- heart attack
- undiagnosed, unusual vaginal bleeding
- untreated thickening of the lining of the womb
- liver disease
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with this medicine, alert your doctor immediately. Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone may cause harm to your unborn child.
Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- history of thickening of the lining of the womb
- risk factors for blood clot disorder e.g. family history, overweight, high blood pressure, high level of cholesterol or fat in your blood, diabetes, lupus (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation), cancer, elderly, tobacco use
- migraine
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- asthma
- gallbladder disease
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that may cause skin or nerve problems)
- heart disease
- kidney disease
If you are going for surgery or certain laboratory tests, inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Screening for cancer, pregnancy test, personal and family medical history assessment may be needed to check the appropriateness of Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone treatment.
- You may need to have routine tests (e.g. breast and cervix exam). Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.
- Regular monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar level and thyroid function may be needed while you are being treated with this medicine.
Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone may cause any of the following side effects: weakness, headache, depressed mood, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or wind, back pain, muscle pain or cramps.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- breast lump, tenderness, soreness or pain, abnormal changes or discharge in the nipple
- unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting
- signs of blood clot e.g. warmth, pain, swelling, numbness or tingling sensation in the extremities
- signs of liver problems e.g. yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, light coloured stool, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
- blurring or loss of vision
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine
- certain antibiotics e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin
- medicines for tuberculosis or TB e.g. rifampicin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. nevirapine, efavirenz, nelfinavir, ritonavir
- medicines for fungal infections e.g. itraconazole, ketoconazole
- medicines for breast cancer or Cushing’s syndrome (high level of hormone known as cortisol) e.g. aminoglutethimide, metyrapone
- herbal medicines e.g. St. John’s wort
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Conjugated oestrogens + Medroxyprogesterone.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Avoid excessive consumption (more than 1 litre a day) of grapefruit juice.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
